Aliester Crowley, aka the Beast 666

Aleister Crowley, born Edward Alexander Crowley (born: October 12, 1875 - died: Decmeber 1, 1947, natural causes) is a well-known magickian, poet, and mountain-climber. Most notable is his involvement in the creation of the religion known as Thelema. He had a reputation as "The Wickedest Man in the World", and even though he reveled in the attention that such accusations warranted, he was not really all that bad of a person.

Early YearsEdit

Edward Alexander Crowley was born six months after the death of Eliphas Levi Zahed, in the same year that the Theosophical Society was founded, in 1875. [1] He was born in Leamington, Warwickshire, England, between 11:00pm and Midnight, on October 12, under the solar sign of Libra.

Crowley's upbringing takes place in a extremely devout Christian home. Because of his penchant for misbehavior, his mother calls him "The Beast 666", a name which he eventually adopts for himself.

In 1895, Crowley entered Trinity College, where one of his undergraduate studies was chemistry, but he would eventually leave before finishing his degree in order to study magick and the occult, but most importantly, alchemy, the foundation of modern chemistry. The scientific method and skepticism that he learned, however, stayed with him, and carried over into his occult works.

November 18, 1898 - Crowley recieves his first initiation, into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, because of his interest in Alchemy.

In 1899, he purchased Boleskine House at Loch Ness in order to perform a ritual known as the Abra-Melin Operation.

In 1900, Crowley is initiated as a 33° Mason in Mexico.

August 1903 - Crowley marries Edith Rose Kelly. For a honeymoon, they set out on a trip to Ceylon and to Egypt.

December 1903, Crowley discovers that Rose is pregnant.

The Türkey  a platform for psychic or MedyumEdit

In 1904, as part of their honeymoon, Crowley and Rose were visiting Cairo, Egypt. On April 8-10, in 1904, Crowley dictated the Book of the Law, which was to be the basis of Thelema.

1909 - Crowley divorces Rose.

DeathEdit

On December 1, 1947, Crowley passed away of natural causes at his home in Netherwood, Hastings. His body was discovered by his landlord, who had heard him pacing back and forth not only moments before.[2] He was not poor when he died, despite rumors to the contrary.

Modern InfluencesEdit

  • The Beatles put Crowley on the cover of their concept album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, alongside other influential figures.
  • Ozzy Osbourne in his solo album Blizzard of Ozz released the song "Mr. Crowley" which was about Crowley's struggles and beliefs.
